Why the Zebras?

People with a rare disease can identify themselves as zebras. Medical students are taught to look for the obvious – “when you hear hoofbeats, don’t expect to see a zebra”.

In other words, look for the more common diagnosis before looking for the unusual. This can often lead to diagnosis delays and so we promote the zebra as a symbol of our rare conditions.
