Hello! I have been working in Immunology at Derriford Hospital (Plymouth) since my appointment as Immunology Specialist Nurse in May 1996. At that time I only worked for half a day a week: now our department has 5 Nurses and I work 4 days a week. We look after over 250 patients with an immune deficiency, approaching 100 on immunoglobulin replacement therapy. Most of these people self infuse at home (SCIg and a few IVIg), but we also look after patients at our Peninsula partner hospitals and in smaller Community Hospitals.
I am fortunate to be supported by an excellent Nursing Team and we work alongside our Medical colleagues. We have held Patient Forums in comfortable surroundings and hosted a GP day to help our GPs look after our PID patients better.
I keep up to date with what is going on with the latest new information about PIDs by attending regional, national and international meetings, often contributing to them. I enjoy passing on what I have learned to Nursing and Medical Students to enthuse them about caring for people with PIDs and have good links with our Colleagues in the Peninsula: I hosted an educational day for our Liaison Nurses in Autumn 2014.
I am looking forward to being part of UKPIPS Medical Advisory panel.
